The notable chimneys of Mirant's Dickerson Generating Station may not seem in keeping with the natural setting of the towpath, but they do remind visitors of the canal's connection with the coal industry, without which it quickly would have faded into obscurity. Warmth of another kind is enjoyed by kayakers who have trained for the Olympics since 1991 in a series of courses heated by the plant's cooling water. [private access only]
