Conococheague Aqueduct

One of eleven aqueducts built on the canal, the Conococheague Aqueduct was targeted by troops during the Civil War. Union troops under Captain Russell were instructed to destroy the Conococheague Aqueduct to prevent Lee from escaping through Williamsport after the battle of Antietam in 1862. Damage done by the Confederates following the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863 was repaired within a month.
