The long hill along the raised bank of the canal is known as Battery Hill or Doubleday Hill. Legend has it that General Abner Doubleday occupied the hill and played (and created the game of) baseball on the field below with his troops, but historians no longer believe this is true. Learn more.
The long hill along the raised bank of the canal is known as Battery Hill or Doubleday Hill. Legend has it that General Abner Doubleday occupied the hill and played (and created the game of) baseball on the field below with his troops, but historians no longer believe this is true. However it is true that Doubleday and his men were briefly bunkered down on this hill early in the war to guard the Potomac River crossing and the town of Williamsport from the Union Army. The soldiers built a battery at this site that is now the location Williamsport’s oldest cemetery, Riverview Cemetery. Town founder General Otho Williams is buried there.

Much of the C&O Canal National Historical Park remains accessible to the public, however, the National Park Service is not able to operate as normal. Scheduled C&O Canal Trust events and Canal Quarters reservations will continue as scheduled.
