“Welcome to Lockhouse 49!”
This summer, the Canal Quarters lockhouse located in Clear Spring, MD was filled with young voices learning about C&O Canal history and exploring the park. Community partners joined us through our community engagement program which helps build collective stewardship to ensure that the park remains a place of learning, exploration, and relaxation. Our programs build community and personal self-confidence by giving people opportunities to discover their local national park and create lasting connections with each other. We welcomed over 70 youth participants this summer to further this initiative.
Our programs range from educational activities to service projects, with many community groups choosing to join us for educational programs and games. This year, we expanded our offerings by introducing a Microscope Detective activity. Participants used pocket microscopes to examine water samples from the Potomac River and compare them to tap water. We also discussed why clean water is important and explored ways to purify water while enjoying outdoor activities.
Inside Lockhouse 49, we explored how lockkeepers lived while the C&O Canal was in operation. We talked about how they would heat the house, get water inside, and entertain themselves. We played games like jacks that kids of lockkeepers would have played. This look into the past was a highlight for many and brought history to life. As we continue to grow our community engagement programs, we have enjoyed welcoming new participants to the park and seeing some return year after year.
“One of the highlights of this year’s summer programs was seeing so many familiar faces from last year. It was nice to catch up and hear about what they have been up to recently. Some participants had started college, while others shared stories about returning to the park with their families after their first visit. It’s rewarding to know that the Community Engagement programs have made such a positive impact on so many people. I am also grateful that we are able to welcome our community partners back to the C&O Canal every year,” reflected Becky McCarty, Youth Education and Community Outreach Manager at the C&O Canal Trust.
In addition to programmatic expansions, the Trust launched a pilot program recruiting volunteers for Community Engagement in partnership with local colleges and universities. Our first volunteer from Shepherd University joined us for most of the programs to provide support and fulfill their degree requirements. We are excited to continue growing these volunteer partnerships to provide adults with meaningful experiences in the community.
As we turn towards the fall, the Trust is looking forward to welcoming more community partners for exploration and service opportunities.
