Tunnel Stones Hike

Tuesday, March 3rd 2020 9:30 am - 2:00 pm

Join Pat White, with the C&O Canal Association, for a Tunnel Stones Hike on Wednesday, March 3, 2020. This 4-hour loop hike will take you off trail and over Sorrel Ridge mountain to find the original surveyor stones used by tunnel builders. The technology used to tunnel through a mountain in 4 different locations, all of which aligned perfectly nearly 400 feet below, is truly amazing. The Paw Paw Tunnel was built between 1836-1850. Pat has led this hike a number of times and is an expert at locating the tunnel surveyor stones!

Considerations: - The hike lasts approx. 4 hours and is roughly 5 miles. We will start/end in the Paw Paw Campground parking area. Please plan to arrive by 9:45 am. - You will hike over Sorrel Ridge, elevation change of 400+ feet. - Dress for the weather. Hiking boots are recommended as we will mostly be off trail, hiking at times through leaves and brush. - Pack a lunch/water. We stop for lunch before hiking down the mountain and back through the Tunnel.

A snow/rain date is scheduled for Wednesday, March 18th.

Group max is 25 participants.
