Whites Ferry

Even on a rainy day, the ferry welcomes passengers. Note the flood markers on the wall. The last of the Potomac River ferries. Named Conrads Ferry during the Civil War, it was later bought and run by Elijah Viers ("Lige") White, a Confederate guerilla whose daring and local knowledge were a thorn in the side of Union forces. Today the ferry continues to link both Loudoun County, Virginia, and Montgomery County, Maryland, in the peaceful pursuit of commuting. They also run a small diner (seasonal) and rent canoes and campsites.
