Directions:
Lockhouse 8 has three main access points:
C&O Canal Towpath: The lockhouse is located immediately adjacent to the towpath, across a footbridge, at mile marker 8.4
Lock 8 Parking Lot: (Clara Barton Parkway): The Lock 8 parking lot is directly off the Clara Barton Parkway and is the next lot after Lock 10. Look for a lot with a slight incline and an “exit” sign.
Once parked, you must take a path which leads downhill to the lockhouse. Please note that this path is about 150 feet long and has a moderately steep grade. This may present issues for guests with mobility issues.
Riverside Drive: Just off of MacArthur Blvd, down 79th street, Riverside Drive in Cabin John dead-ends at a maintenance path leading to Lock 8. There are several parking spots here. However, please note that this lot is not owned or monitored by the Trust or NPS. Rather, it is administered by Montgomery County. While the maintenance path provides a less steep grade, the Trust and NPS are not liable for vehicles parked in this lot.
Outhouse Directions:
The outhouse is located roughly 125 feet from the lockhouse along the access path that connects Riverside Drive to the Lockhouse grounds and towpath:
From the front door:
- Begin by walking out the front door, or heading toward the back of the house where the side addition is located.
- Continue along the path that leads over the footbridge at the back of the house
- Continue straight, walking past the bench. Continue taking the path straight. The path will bend to the right. The porta john is straight ahead.
