Incline Plane

From Fletchers, head downstream almost a mile. On your right, you will see a wayside sign about the incline plane. Look straight up from the wayside and you can barely make out the incline. The incline was built in 1876 to lower boats directly into the Potomac River to avoid the boat traffic in Georgetown. It was an important part of the canal's heyday, but was destroyed in the 1889 flood and never rebuilt.
