In 1971 the C&O Canal was designated a national historical park. To commemorate its 40th anniversary, the National Park Service and the C&O Canal Trust are unveiling 40 hidden gems in the park over 40 weeks. These discoveries, located throughout the park's 184.5 mile length, will:

• Take you places you've not yet explored, right here in your own backyard,
• Tell the stories the park rangers most love to share,
• Deepen your appreciation and understanding of one of America's great historical parks.

To make your visits even more fun, many of the discoveries are being revealed in conjunction with an event or festival in one of the Canal Towns along the towpath.
