Winter Events & Programs at C&O Canal National Historical Park

Winter is a wonderful time to experience the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park (C&O Canal) on your own, with a friend, or by attending a special event or ranger program. The park is open daily and visitors are welcome to join rangers for the following fun and exciting activities, December through February.

December 3 – Gilmore Light Ensemble Performance – 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Great Falls Tavern, Potomac, MD. Come listen to this 19th century-inspired band as they perform traditional music and carols using hammered dulcimer, guitar, banjo, and accordion.

December 9 – Saralyn musical troupe – 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., Great Falls Tavern, Potomac, MD. Performances include songs on the mandolin, guitar, and banjo.

December 16 – Mountain Dulcimers of Northern Virginia – 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.Great Falls Tavern, Potomac, MD. Visitors may try their hand at playing a mountain dulcimer, percussion instrument, or simply sing along.

January 1 – First Day Hike – All day, Great Falls Tavern, Potomac, MD. Kick off the new year and join us for activities and fun on New Year’s Day.

January 27 – C&O Canal’s Historic Aqueducts – 2:00 p.m., Great Falls Tavern, Potomac, MD. Join C&O Canal Volunteer, Steve Dean, for a presentation on the eleven C&O Canal aqueducts. Steve will explore each aqueduct, interesting features, past and present restoration projects, and the function. This program is limited to the first 20 guests, to RSVP, please contact Kelsey Smith, Assistant Volunteer Coordinator, at [email protected] or call 301-745-5810.

February 18 – George Washington Ball – 1:00 p.m., Great Falls Tavern, Potomac, MD. Join Dr. Larry Keener Farley and his 19th-century dance ensemble for an afternoon Civil War-era dance. Visitors will be able to enjoy the music and join in the fun and dance. Instruction will be provided; no previous experience is required!
